Antwerp stages heavyweight showdown as Belgium host United States stars
Belgium’s triumph at the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 did not come by chance. The Cats, led by basketball superstar Emma Meesseman and complemented by a talented supporting cast came back against Spain in Ljubljana to take their first EuroBasket title from La Roja’s hands.
Team USA, already sure of their Olympic participation thanks to their FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 title, don’t seem to underplay the occasion.
Head Coach Cheryl Reeve is not looking to do anyone favors as she called up a strong roster headlined by five-time Olympic champion Diana “White Mamba” Taurasi and 2023 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart.
The Sportpaleis crowd will be buzzing to welcome the very excellence of world basketball, with both teams trying to send a message every other Olympic challenger. A win for Belgium would almost surely put them in pole position to book their trip to the nearby Paris.
2023 was the “Year of Emma" - will 2024 start with more of the same for the Fenerbahce Alagoz Holding star, or will Team USA plant a seed of doubt in the Belgian Cats’ minds, who will be under pressure of performing in front of their home fans?
