Spain: Veteran Leadership Meets Emerging Talent

It wasn’t a smooth passage for Spain, but they survived a major scare against Sweden to book their place in the quarter-finals. A 78–75 overtime win revealed both their resilience and their flaws. Alba Torrens led with 20 points before fouling out, while Mariona Ortiz came up with the game-winning layup under pressure with 20 seconds to go in the OT. Spain’s veterans delivered when it mattered, but it's their new generation that could define their ceiling.

Led by head coach Miguel Méndez, Spain have become one of the tournament's most stifling defensive teams. They lead all quarter-finalists in steals per game and have produced clutch blocks in key moments. With rising names like Iyana Martín and Elena Buenavida playing real minutes alongside the veterans, the cohesion and structure are evident—even if the offensive execution sometimes lags behind. They’ll need to be sharper to return to the podium.

Czechia: Playing with House Money

Czechia are still a bit of a mystery. Wins over Montenegro and Portugal - both of whom struggled throughout the tournament -gave them early momentum, but their double-digit loss to Belgium raised questions about their ceiling. That said, they’ve clearly bought into playing team-first basketball and moved the ball with purpose in the group stage.

The quartet of Julie Reisingerová, Eliska Hamzová, Veronika Voráčková, and Emma Čechová have been the core of a well-orchestrated offense, and Czechia’s spacing and passing have been a genuine strength. They’ve already secured a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments, so the pressure is off - which could make them even more dangerous.

Spain come in as favourites, but Czechia have enough tools  to ask questions. If they can keep the tempo in their control and limit Spain’s perimeter pressure, this one could stay close.
