Angola Basketball World Cup Qualification
In the first round of qualifying for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Angola were placed in Group C, alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea and the Central African Republic.
They progressed through this group comfortably and their 4-2 record was good enough for second place, behind an undefeated Côte d'Ivoire team. But, things could have been different. While Angola lost both of their games against Côte d'Ivoire, they had chances to win both and ultimately lost two close encounters by a combined margin of only three points!
In the second qualification phase, Angola lined up in Group E, alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Guinea and Uganda. Here, they went undefeated, winning all six of their games. This included two statement wins over Nigeria, who were Africa’s highest-ranked side at the time, according to the FIBA rankings.
When the results from the first qualification phase were carried over and adjustments were made for Mali’s disqualification from the first round of qualifying, Angola finished with an overall qualifying record of 8-2. This was again good enough for second place in the group behind Côte d'Ivoire and a guaranteed place at the World Cup.
Best World Cup Qualification Plays
Coach Clarós used the African Qualifiers to bring in some new blood and build a new generation of talent.
He ultimately relied on a strong core of players, with Childe Dundão, Gerson Gonçalves, Gerson Domingos and Teotónio Dó each playing in all 12 of Angola’s games. Added to this, four more players, including young center Jilson Bango, appeared in nine games.
The undoubted star of qualifying for Angola was the colorful character, Childe Dundão, who to go along with his flashy entertaining style, grabbed more steals than any other African player! He also led Angola in points scored (145), assists (43) and cumulative efficiency (+164).
Check out Angola’s Top 10 plays from the qualifiers below. Some of the dimes and buckets on display are remarkable, but the real highlight is Childe Dundão’s buzzer-beating three-pointer from inside his own three-point line!

Current Star Players
Angola were one of the last nations to reveal their roster for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The little-big star names to look out for are Childe Dundão and Bruno Fernando. This came to fruition at the tournament where both players averaged a team-high 14 points per game.
Making his FIBA Basketball World Cup debut in 2023, Dundão is a diminutive point guard (he’s only 5ft 6in tall) who has been a major part of the Angolan side in recent years. He’s also been a force in the Angolan Basketball League, where he’s won four titles, two Angolan Cups and two Angolan Supercups since 2019. This year, he was also named the Angolan Cup Final MVP.
Big man Bruno Fernando only featured in one qualifying window due to his NBA commitments with the Atlanta Hawks. Other names to look out for in the Angola squad include several star contributors to their qualifying campaign, including Gerson Gonçalves, Gerson Domingos and Jilson Bango.
Legends of the Team
The current Angolan roster may be packed with talent, but kids on the streets of Luanda are trying to emulate the feats of one man: Joaquim ‘Kikas’ Gomes.
Gomes was a standout player at college, where he played for Valparaiso in the United States. He then enjoyed a stellar domestic career, where he won titles in Angola, Germany and the Netherlands.
However, he saved his very best performances for the national team. With Angola, he claimed four AfroBasket gold medals, one AfroBasket silver medal and two AfroBasket MVP trophies. He also featured for his country in four FIBA Basketball World Cups.
Historical World Cup Performance
Since joining FIBA in 1979, Angola has qualified for nine out of a possible 11 FIBA Basketball World Cups.
However, the Angola basketball team are yet to make the quarter-final stage at the tournament, with their best performance to date coming in 2006, when they finished 9th.
In this tournament, the team also played in one of the World Cup’s most remarkable games of all time, a triple-overtime game against Germany. Four years later, Angola got their revenge in another intense battle that also went to overtime. You can watch this game below:

Previous Successes and Tournament Wins
Basketball Angola have also made five appearances at the Summer Olympic Games. The side qualified for every edition of the Games between 1992 and 2008, but they never reached the quarter-finals.
Although they’re yet to make a splash at the World Cup or the Olympics, Angola has historically dominated at the FIBA AfroBasket, where they’ve claimed 11 gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals since 1983. They’ve also won three gold medals at the African Games.
