How does the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 work? 

Since 2007, the tournament has run every two years and is broken into multiple stages: 

Group Stage: The tournament begins with a group stage where the participating teams are divided into 4 groups of 4 teams. Within each group, every team will play against each one time in a round-robin format running from 24th – 27th June.  

Round of 16: All teams qualify for the Round of 16 with matchups determined by group phase results. The winners of the Round of 16 games will advance to the Quarter-Finals, while the losers move to the Classification Games (places 9-16).  These games will be played on 28th June.  

Knockout Phase: These are single elimination games starting with the Quarter-Finals. The winners will move on to the Semi-Finals, and the two winners from the Semi-Finals will advance to the Finals. The knockout phase will be played across 30th June – 1st July. 

Finals: The two finalists will compete in the championship game, vying for the title of U19 Basketball World Cup champions. The Finals will be played on 2nd July from Debrecen, Hungary. The 3rd Place, 5th Place and 7th Place games are also happening earlier the same day as the Finals.

The History of FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023?  

This is the flagship event for men’s youth international basketball. It features the top 16 teams from across the globe and since 2007 has been held every two years. The trophy was first awarded to the USA in 1979 when it was hosted in Brazil. The tournament has been held 15 times to date, with 8 different nations being crowned champions. The current defending champions are the USA. They defeated a French squad 83-81 that featured Victor Wembanyama in the 2021 finals. Chet Holmgren was named TISSOT MVP for the USA. He was also included in the tournament’s All-Star Five which featured Victor Wembanyama (France), Jaden Ivey (USA), Zach Edey (Canada) and Nikola Jokić (Serbia).
